First look: Huawei Mate X
We saw the latest folding phone, but once again couldn’t touch it. MICHAEL SIMON reports. The folding phone war has officially begun. Just days after Samsung showed off its Galaxy Fold (see page 53), Huawei took the wraps off the Mate X, which it is calling the world’s fastest and thinnest folding phone. It comes in a different shades of blue. Plus, it has 5G. Oh, it’s on Huawei’s spin on the folding phone is quite a bit different than Samsung’s. Unlike the Galaxy Fold, the Mate X folds outward, so the outside screen is the same as the inside one. When opened, it measures a full eight inches with an impressive 2,480x2,200 resolution, versus 7.3 inches and an unknown number of pixels on the Galaxy Fold.
The main outside screen – which Huawei calls the “daily driver” display – measures 6.6 inches (2,480x1,148) and has extremely slim, uniform bezels all around, while the secondary rear display is 6.38 inches (2,480x892). The ratios of all three screens are a little funky – 19.5:9 for the main display, 25:9 for the rear one, and 8:7.1 for the tablet, but that’s to be expected in the early rounds of the folding phone revolution.
Hands-on: LG G8 Thin Q
The LG G8 ThinQ looks so good that LG doesn’t even want you to touch it, writes DOMINIC PRESTON. It was Mobile World Congress, which meant it was time for LG to unveil its latest flagship phone: the G8 ThinQ. Although this year it’s been accompanied by a second flagship device – the 5G-capable LG V50 ThinQ (see page 19) – the G8 is arguably the more interesting of the two. That’s because it’s the first to feature LG’s new ‘touchless’ controls – an undeniably silly gimmick – and the related Hand ID unlocking tech – an equally
Hands-on: LG V50 ThinQ 5G
The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is a boring flagship bolstered by a bonkers accessory: the Dual Screen, reveals DOMINIC PRESTON. LG has usually staggered its flagship phone releases, with different models hitting stores six months or so apart each year. In 2018, the company began moving to a more flexible schedule though, and this year it’s thrown caution to the wind and decided to release two flagships simultaneously: the G8 ThinQ (see page 12) and the V50 ThinQ 5G. That means we’re getting the V50 ThinQ just months after the company released the V40 ThinQ
Hands-on: Nokia 9 PureView
Nokia’s 9 PureView has five rear camera lenses. But can this make up for using last year’s processor? DOMINIC PRESTON reports. Ever since the brand’s revival at the hands of parent company HMD Global a few years ago, Nokia has become a major player in the budget and mid-range smartphone markets, but it’s struggled to crack the flagship space. Can the Nokia 9 PureView change that?Announced at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, the 9 PureView has one clear selling point – it’s the first smartphone with a whopping five rear camera lenses
10 Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e and S10+ features
It turns out we didn’t know everything,At long last, the Samsung Galaxy S10 has arrived. And, well, it’s pretty much exactly what we thought it would be, with three sizes, a hole in the display for the front camera, and all sorts of new colour options. But even with months of leaks and rumours, there were still a few announcements during Unpacked that legitimately surprised us.
Hands-on: Samsung Galaxy Fold
The Galaxy Fold is poised to rock the world with a totally new take on premium smartphones, writes MICHAEL SIMON. I attended Samsung Unpacked with a singular mission: to go hands-on with Samsung’s Galaxy Fold. With a 4.6in display on the front, and a 7.3in display tucked inside, it looks to be a revolutionary smartphone – assuming the phone is as elegant in the hand as it was during Samsung’s scripted presentation. But, alas, while Samsung’s demo space was packed silly with Galaxy S10s, the Galaxy Fold wasn’t available. There wasn’t even a Galaxy Fold entombed in a glass display case.
Hands-on: Xiaomi Mi 9
The Xiaomi Mi 9 is here and looks to be one of the best mid-range phones of all time. CHRIS MARTIN reveals why Xiaomi’s new Mi 9 smartphone has some seriously impressive specifications and an outrageous price. Read on to find out more. Price and release date We don’t have a UK price yet, but the Mi 9 will start at just €449, and we expect the cost in pounds will be similar. That base level will get you a 64GB model
